Students benefit from an elected Student Council that represents the concerns of the student body. The Student Council's executive committee meets with the Headmaster every week to discuss issues and suggestions brought up by the students covering everything from food to religion.

What is a Student Council?

Student Council is a student-based civic organization designed to help promote the school spirit and leadership among students.

Students participating in all levels of the Council will maintain a high standard of personal conduct. Council members must demonstrate leadership qualities by serving a good examples of behaviour through their words and actions.

All Council members are expected to participate in approved activities, which will serve to enhance the quality of both the physical and behavioural environment of the college.

Purpose

The purpose of Student Council is to:

  1. Develop positive mental attitude and self-confident
  2. Promote harmonious relationship throughout the entire college
  3. Improve students/faculty relationships
  4. Improve morale and general welfare
  5. Provide a forum for students expression
  6. Plan and execute special events or projects

Benefits

Benefits of being involved in Student Council include the opportunity to improve reading and writing skills, gain experience in public speaking and to learn how to make a positive impact on college and community environment. In addition, the Student Council serves as a chance to meet up with new friends and work with a wide variety of people.

Objectives

The Student Council aims to:

  1. Provide a democratic form in which students can address those college-related issues that have impact in their lives
  2. Maintain open communication between students and staff of the college
  3. Train students to take up responsibility and perform their duties

Each member of the Student Council must be responsible and willing to work hard. As a member of the Student Council you are expected to represent other students on whatever issues brought up to you to the Management. Bear in mind that the Student Council may speak up their concerns but does not have the power to change any of the college policies.

Key Requirements

  1. Obtaining a minimum of grade C in the 1st semester exam for all subjects
  2. No records of disciplinary/misconduct according to college rules

Community Projects

The Student Council will be involved in many community projects such as:

  1. Beautifying the college
  2. Community service – CSR
  3. Students opinion polls, newsletter, bulletins etc

The success of the Student Council is based on your hard work, quality time spent to plan and execute college activities, skills and talent.

President

A President is the leader of the Student Council. He must lead and encourage the rest to perform their responsibilities as expected.

 

Responsibilities to other members of the Student Council includes:

  1. Coordinate meetings
  2. Appoint Committee members
  3. Work closely with other members on any specific agenda and budget planning
  4. Prepare a write up and submit to the Council’s Secretary
  5. Assist the Council’s Secretary to summarize the group decisions in such a way that the decisions are clearly recorded in the minutes and well-documented
  6. Submit all Council reports to Advisor
  7. Work closely with the Treasurer and must be prudent in budget spending
  8. Maintain fruitful working relationship with other Council members
  9. Submit proposed agendas to Council for voting
  10. Participate as a voting member of the Student Council
  11. Praise Council members in public for a job well-done on projects/assignments
  12. Serve as a Moderator during Council debates. Allow different sides of issues to be presented
  13. Keep in touch with all Committee members

Responsibilities to other students

  1. Bring up their concerns to the Management/Administration and to develop a specific program to address these concerns
  2. Keep in touch with various colleges clubs and organizations
  3. Seek for student opinions

Responsibilities to Faculty/Administration

  1. Keep Faculty and Administration informed on significant development in the Council
  2. Arrange direct dialogs between educators and students
  3. Work with Faculty and Administration to design and implement ways to enhance educational atmosphere of the college
  4. Point out problems in the college before they become crisis

Responsibilities to the Community

  1. Attend parent organization meetings
  2. Speak at local civic organization meetings
  3. Invite civic leaders to speak up at the college to share their thoughts and motivation

 

Other responsibilities

  1. Keep and maintain all correspondence in a proper filing system as a record
  2. Keep a journal indicating successful procedures and issues encountered throughout the academic year
  3. Keep a neat contact list in a proper Address Book

Vice President

A Vice President is the assistant leader of the Student Council. He must lead and encourage the rest to perform their responsibilities as expected. The Vice President will act as Council leader in the absence of the President.

Responsibilities

  1. Be prepared to assume the responsibilities of the President at any time (See: Responsibilities of the President)
  2. Assist in the preparation of budgets and agendas
  3. Assist the President to coordinate/delegate the work to the Committee members
  4. Help explain the opinions of the President to the Council members
  5. Contribute ideas during meetings
  6. Work with all Council members to iron out any differences between parties

Secretary

A Secretary is expected to record any minutes of meeting and various Council activities accurately and make sure all info is current and up-to-date.

Responsibilities

  1. Keep an accurate record of the exact wording of issues considered by the Council. This recording is call the minutes of the Council meetings
  2. Give President feedback after the meetings
  3. Help the group to reach decisions that may clearly recorded
  4. Contribute own ideas and personal opinions whenever is appropriate and necessary
  5. Prepare and distribute agenda
  6. Take attendance
  7. Distribute copies of minutes of last meeting
  8. Keep an accurate index of all Council minutes
  9. Make certain that Advisor receives copy of minutes of each meeting
  10. Type neatly all letters that are to be officially sent by the Council and create a file to keep all correspondence sent and received by the Council
  11. Produce a Student Council Directory
  12. Develop a fruitful relationship with Office Secretaries

Treasurer

A Treasurer is expected to keep accurate records of all financial transactions of the Council.

Responsibilities

  1. Work closely with Account Department to understand policies for student finances; to set up and maintain an account of the Council
  2. Work with Advisors, President, Vice President and Committee Members to formulate an active budget for the Council
  3. Make Cost-Benefit Analysis of proposed activities and projects
  4. Make monthly financial statements and report to the Council

Representatives

Each Representative is expected to embody the Council’s effort to be the student voice. A Representative must develop a dialog between students and the Student Council.

Responsibilities

  1. Make an effort to update students with upcoming Council projects and activities on a regular basis
  2. Presenting as fairly as possible, student’s ideas and concerns to the Council
  3. Attend all Student Council functions (fundraisers, work projects etc)
  4. Take informal polls on how students feel about certain projects
  5. Encourage non-members of Student Council to participate in projects and activities
  6. Be active in Council meetings
  7. Report any problem to Advisors before they develop into major issues
  8. Respect all academic and support departments and administration
  9. Seek for opinions of teachers on various aspects and issues
  10. Practise and display proper behaviour at all times
